There has been a good discussion in DIY Live Forums about a possible Atmel Programmer. I was not aware of this because I have never used an Atmel, but Tom the Wombat from superpositioned.com noted that the AVR chips are programmable straight from your serial port. This is good news for me because once I get settled down a bit (it may be a few months), I really want to start work on generating video with a microcontroller. I have found that it may be best to do it with an Atmel Mega32, instead of with a PIC. The only reason I say that is because I have found an invaluable resource for this chip at Cornell university’s engineering site.
My PICkit 1 PIC chip programmer does not program the 16F84, anyway, and I did not want to buy an atmel programmer. This article is about how to program an Atmel Mega32 through Linux. The only problem is I don’t have Linux. Here is another link for a programmer that you can build that does not use Linux.
