There is a good discussion going on over at DIY Live Forums about building a Hex Clock. I am not talking about the funky hex clocks where you change the format of how we keep time. I just mean a clock that is on the normal 12 hr, 60 min schedule, but instead of giving you standard numbers, it gives the time in Hex format. For this clock, 12:59 would become C_3B, and 1:00 would be 1_00. There are a few ideas on the forums that discuss how to do this. Probably the easiest way is to use a 14 pin microcontroller, like the PIC16F684. You would need a total of 12 I/O pins to get this to work, and you would need 3 7-segment displays.

Anyway, I invite you all to come join DIY Live forums, and come discuss this project with us.
If you need help reading hex numbers, then here is a simple calculator for you.

  4. You need only 8 pines i/o ports. Do you know about “charlieplexing”?
