DIY Sprinkler Timer

This next post was submitted to me, (which is always helpful for anyone to send me stuff, I just have to weed through the spam that I get). This is a pretty simple project, but very effective. I understand what the author says about having to water potted plants twice a day. He lives in Arizona, and I live in southern Alabama, which is pretty hot, just a different kind of heat. I have more humidity.

Anyway, we have all seen the cheap dollar store timers. The ones that plug into the wall, and have little tabs that can be set to turn things on and off at certain times. Well this DIYer needed a cheap timer, and already had the 24VAC valve, and pipe. The only problem is that the standard timer outputs 115VAC. He found a cheap plug in style transformer that out put 24 VAC, and plugged it into the timer. This is all you really have to do, and I probably would not have written about it if that is all he did, but he put it in a nice little case, added a 3 way switch, and then added some LEDs.

Any project that uses LEDs, and switches, is a good DIY project, and worthy of some attention. Now he has an enclosure, that will turn on and off his sprinkler at a specified time, or he can simply turn the switch down to get manual power to his valve. Check out the schematic above.
